It’s necessary to clarify the difference between deep tissue massage and deep compressive massage. Deep tissue massage intentionally and specifically affects change in deeper layers, even into viscera. Reaching these layers is best accomplished with a slow sinking touch, which follows the pace your tissue will naturally allow, and may at times not even feel like significant pressure. If you enjoy a heavy pressure that gives you a lovely squashed feeling, please schedule yourself an Ashiatsu session.

I have parsed out a few therapies below to give you an idea of what is possible. If you are uncertain of what you really need, please schedule a visit according to length of time and we will work together to design your session.

I may have suggestions for self-care and will do my best to explain the science and why it is important. However, everyone’s healing journey follows its own path. You are welcome to take what is beneficial for you now and leave the rest.

Bodywork

Pain sensitivity, tissue texture and type, trauma and emotions determine our receptivity and what makes us feel good.

Just as we are layered and multi-dimensional, so too is good bodywork.

Myofascial therapy plays a lead role in most sessions and bodywork is designed within the framework of structural function. It can include cupping and elements from many other healing modalities and philosophies, both Eastern and Western.

It can feel grounding, soothing, and with even long strokes. It may also feel like deep sinking and dynamic with active or assisted flowing movement.

Ashiatsu

Do you remember being a kid and getting a big bear hug from a loving adult? That strong sensory input leaves us feeling very secure and able to let go.

Ashiatsu massage uses therapist foot pressure and supported bodyweight to deeply compress and glide. It is a modern Western interpretation of several Asian footwork therapies such as Chavutti Thirumal, an Indian treatment developed by martial artists. Ashiatsu is wonderful for vertebral traction and provides a wholebody fluid exchange.

This therapy can be a standalone session or incorporated into a hands based table massage. Ashiatsu massage is contraindicated for certain client conditions such as osteoporosis, deep vein thrombosis, or blood thinning medication. When scheduling, please be aware that we may adjust accordingly during your appointment.

Prenatal

Side-lying in second and third trimesters with specialized support pillows for ergonomics.

Prenatal massage focuses on relieving discomfort in hips, low back, and neck due to anterior pelvic tilt and reduced rib movement.

This is also an opportunity to savor and honor your creative power. You have done amazing work and your babies love when you enjoy yourselves. What makes you feel good makes them feel good.

Thai

Thai massage is experienced on a cushy floor mat with the client wearing stretchy or loose clothing. It is a healing practice that developed alongside Theraveda Buddhism and is influenced by indigenous T’ai medicine and Vedic principals.

The yogic-like movements and rhythmic application of pressure along energetic Sen lines supports the release of stagnation. From a Western perspective, the unique joint positions activate dormant proprioceptors in tendons and ligaments. This expands and details your brain’s neurological bodymap.

Ultimately, the goal of Thai massage is to help unfurl and open yourself to both give and receive Metta or ‘lovingkindness’. If you wish, you may set an intention for your Thai massage and we will allow that to fill the space.
